I just finished reading "Speak For A Living"  by Anne Bruce. I’ve really enjoyed reading this book. It’s good for someone just getting into the business or the seasoned pro.

Believe it or not, some companies are already planning their company holiday party! If you want a particular hall or the perfect entertainment, booking way in advance is a great idea. Even if you don’t know the exact location of the party, but do know the city and time of the event, you can still reserve your speaker or entertainment. So many companies call me in November or December wanting me for prime dates. They are so sad when they find out I’ve already been booked for a year or two for the date they want. It’s not too early to start planning this special corporate event. Usually the best speakers and entertainers are booked way before November or December. It’s still a good idea to call and see if they are available. Sometimes they have an event that was moved to another date or canceled for some reason. Another great idea is to have a couple of dates for the party in mind. This way, if the speaker or entertainer you’d like to hire isn’t available on one date, they might be on the other one.

You want a professional speaker or entertainer for this very important event. There are so many times over my past 20+ years in the business that I’ve heard horror stories about someone hiring a speaker or entertainer that ended up ruining the party. The person booking the party didn’t care about the quality of the presentation. They were only worried about price. This is such an important event to show your employees that they are appreciated. Don’t hire a cheap motivational speaker or corporate entertainer that will only embarrass you or your guests with dirty jokes or just a bad presentation. Ask to see letters and video testimonials from their past clients. Check out their promotional material and see how long they’ve been in business and who they worked for. If they don’t have any of these things to show you …. RUN!
