We all have goals in life. Some are small goals and others large. In either case we don’t want to put them off or lose focus on the end prize.
“It’s time for me to lose some weight.” That’s something I’ve said countless times and haven’t done as well on as I should. It’s been one of my mail goals in life. I’ve lost weight, felt great and put the pounds back on. It’s frustrating at times.
I make my living as a entertainer and motivational speaker. Companies hire me to motivate their employees to accomplish their goals. I have to accomplish my goals in the weight department now. I can’t put it off. It’s now or never. I have to use what I teach others to do to my advantage this time. I need to focus on ME.
I went to get my yearly physical and the doctor said I need to lose weight. It was something I knew I have to do, but need to focus on it and just do it. I want to look better and feel healthier. I want to do this for me and for my family. I want to be around for many, many more years.
As we all know goal setting is easier said than done. We need a plan to accomplish our goals, but the main thing is just doing the steps and not putting it off.
Exercise usually bores me out of my mind so I’ll have to get a good audiobook or podcast going to keep my mind busy as I do cardio and weight training. I’m not looking to bulk up and get like the guy in the photo on the top of this post, but I just want to lose weight and get fit.
I bought some kettlebells before and noticed a bit of a change after working out with them. I think I’ll do that as part of my exercise ritual. I’m also going to finally dust off my DDP Yoga DVDs and workbook and put that into my daily to-do list.
My best friend, Michael reminded me of using two glasses one of which is filled with marbles to watch my progress. I put one marble for each pound I want to lose in one glass and each time I lose a pound I’ll put one marble into the other glass.
I’ll be able to visually see the pounds I lost slowly but surely filling up as the other starting glass has fewer marbles in it. I’ll keep it up as long as I don’t lose my marbles in the process.
More than exercise my diet is something else I’ll need to change. My doctor said that rice and other carbs are good to stay away from.
My wife is Japanese and we eat a lot of rice. I’ll have to switch to more vegetables that I normally do, lean meat and less of everything.
A healthy diet and exercise is something everyone should do. It’s a given and we hear it all the time.
Goal setting is the same no matter if it’s pounds you want to lose or sales you want to make. Make a plan and stick to it. Do you want to make $100,000 in sales? Put 100 marbles in a jar and put one at a time over for everyone $1,000 you make. Just like the weight loss marbles you’ll be able to visually see how many more you need to reach your goals.
If you go off track on your goal see what is holding you back. Make lists or what you need to do to accomplish your goals.
If you have the same old thinking you’ll get the same old results.
Picture yourself accomplishing your goals in life. Some like making a vision board and others like rewarding themselves with a little gift, trip or something for when they accomplish their goal.
The reward doesn’t have to be huge, but our brains and egos like that little pat on the back for a job well done. If I lose all the weight I have in mind I’d like to go to Thailand. It’s someplace I’ve never been, but always wanted to go. If not Thailand I’d like to go back to San Miguel de Allende because out of all the places I’ve been so far, it’s my favorite.
What Are Your Goals In Life?
Do you want to make more money? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to get that degree you’ve always wanted to get? We all have different goals in life or various reasons for wanting to accomplish the same goals others want to accomplish.
An accountability partner never hurts. Have a friend or co-worker in your corner to root you on as you set out to accomplish your goals. Stay away from the negative people that will tell you that you won’t be able to accomplish your goals.
Setting Life Goals
As you start setting life goals or setting business goals don’t shoot too high right from the start. Work at accomplishing your large goal by going at it a step at a time.
Set realistic goals. As you reach for the stars keep your feet on the ground. Don’t set goals that are a one in a million shot and think you are going to accomplish them right away.
Odds are I’ll never be all muscle and perfectly fit. I know that and my goals line up with that in mind. I’m not wanting to go for a perfect 6 pack for my abs, I just want to get in a large or medium shirt instead of a 2XL. I want to go to the amusement park and fit on all the rides, not just a few. My goals are obtainable. I’ll get there!
I told my doctor how much I wanted to lose and she said it was too high of a goal. She said I’d get frustrated and maybe lose focus. She suggested I go for 10 pound goals at a time. I lost 5 last week or only 5 more to my first 10 pound goal. Chipping away at the large goal in smaller chunks might be the best bet. I’ll get to the ideal weight I want a 10 pound step at a time. After this next 5 pounds I’ll have 9 steps to go.
That makes my brain look at it a little more focused. The 5 pounds was easy and I think the next 5 will be, too. I’ll get to the first 10 pounds and then start on the next 10.
Like in the $100,000 in sales goal take those in chunks, too. Treat yourself to a little something for every $10,000 goal mark. You’ll be to your $100,000 goal hopefully in no time by focusing on the smaller ones along the way.
By this time next year I plan to be posting my before and after pictures and telling you I reached my goal. Don’t wait until New Years to start on any of your goals in life. Don’t put them off. Start today!
