If you’re booking corporate entertainment in Dallas and looking for a mentalist or mind reader who actually knows this market, you’re in the right place. Dallas is one of the busiest convention cities in the country, which means planners here have their pick of vendors for just about everything — but it also means the entertainment needs to work harder to stand out in a room full of people who’ve sat through plenty of corporate events before.
ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S BUSIEST CORPORATE MARKETS
Dallas has built its economy around exactly the kind of company that books a mentalist and mind reader show — finance, tech, energy, and a huge base of sales organizations headquartered here or running regional operations out of the metro. It’s a market I’ve worked often, from large sales conferences filling a downtown ballroom to smaller regional meetings, and one thing stays consistent: Dallas audiences are professional, a little more reserved walking in than some other cities, and that’s exactly the kind of room a mentalism show is built to crack open. There’s a real payoff in watching a skeptical, buttoned-up Dallas crowd loosen up once the show gets rolling.
THE VENUE: KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON CONVENTION CENTER
Most of the large-scale convention business in Dallas runs through the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, a genuinely massive facility with more than a million square feet of exhibition space and dozens of configurable meeting rooms, including the largest column-free exhibit hall in the country. For a mentalist and mind reader show like mine, that kind of flexible space means the act can scale to whatever the event calls for — an intimate breakout session in one of the smaller meeting rooms or a full-scale general session in one of the ballrooms, without losing the interactive, up-close feel that makes the show work.
For planners running a sales conference or corporate event outside downtown, the Irving Convention Center is another strong option in the metro, and one perk I always point out to clients staying nearby: I can take the DART train straight to Irving for about three dollars instead of needing a rideshare, which keeps things simple on event day and means I’m never at the mercy of Dallas traffic to get where I need to be on time.
WHY A MENTALIST FITS THIS ROOM
I get asked sometimes how a mind reader act plays in a market as big and competitive as Dallas compared to a smaller city. The honest answer is that the size of the market doesn’t change how the show works — a good mentalist reads the room in front of him, not the size of the convention center. What does change in Dallas is the scale planners are usually working with. A lot of the sales conferences that come through here are large, multi-day events with hundreds or even a few thousand attendees, and corporate entertainment in Dallas has to be able to hold that big a room while still making each individual audience member feel like they could be pulled into the act at any moment. That balance, big enough for the room but personal enough to feel real, is exactly what I’ve built the show around.
Dallas is also a market where I do a fair amount of work tailoring the show specifically around a company’s sales goals rather than running a generic act, since so many of the groups coming through are sales teams themselves. When the audience is made up of people who sell for a living, there’s an added layer of fun in watching them try to figure out how the show is done — a sales team spends its whole career reading other people, so there’s a natural moment in the show where the tables turn and they realize they’re the ones being read instead.
BEYOND THE BALLROOM
If your group is staying an extra day or bringing family along, Dallas has plenty to offer beyond the convention center. The Dallas Arts District downtown is one of the largest urban arts districts in the country, with the Dallas Museum of Art and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science both an easy walk or short ride from most downtown hotels. None of that is part of the show itself, obviously — my act is built for a corporate ballroom, not a family outing — but it’s useful for a planner weighing whether to build in extra time for a spouse program or an extended stay.
