If you’re booking corporate entertainment in Las Vegas and looking for a mentalist or mind reader who can cut through a city that never stops competing for attention, you’ve found him. Las Vegas hosts more conventions and corporate events than almost any other city in the country, and that means the entertainment on stage is up against some of the biggest production values anywhere in the world before it even opens its mouth.
THE BIGGEST CONVENTION MARKET IN THE COUNTRY
Las Vegas built its entire modern economy around hosting events, and the sheer density of sales conferences, trade shows, and corporate meetings running through the city at any given time is unlike anywhere else I work. As a corporate mentalist and mind reader who’s done plenty of shows here, I’ve found a Las Vegas audience tends to have seen a lot — big production shows on the Strip, elaborate stage sets, plenty of flash — which actually works in a mentalism and mind reading act’s favor. There’s no set to compete with, no special effects, just a room full of people watching their own coworkers get read in ways that genuinely surprise them, and that kind of show stands out precisely because it isn’t trying to out-produce the Strip.
Between the Las Vegas Convention Center, The Venetian Expo, and the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, all within about four miles of each other, Las Vegas has three of the largest convention facilities in the country running at once most weeks of the year. For a sales conference or national meeting, that density means a company’s event is one of dozens happening in the city simultaneously, which raises the bar for what actually gets people talking afterward.
THE VENUE: LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER
Most of the largest convention business in the city runs through the Las Vegas Convention Center, a 4.6-million-square-foot facility and the second-largest exhibit space in the country, with 225 meeting rooms and ceiling heights up to 42 feet in the newer West Hall. For a mentalist and mind reader show like mine, that range of room sizes means the act can work a tight executive breakout in the morning and a general session for a few thousand people that same evening without losing what makes it work up close.
The Las Vegas Convention Center sits less than a mile from the Strip, with nearly 150,000 hotel rooms in the surrounding area. For planners, that proximity means attendees can walk or take a short rideshare from their hotel to the general session and back, which keeps a multi-day sales conference feeling contained even in a city built to pull people in a dozen directions.
WHY A MENTALIST FITS THIS ROOM
I get asked sometimes whether a mind reader act plays differently in a city full of magic and illusion shows than it does somewhere like Atlanta or Orlando. It doesn’t, really — a good mentalist reads the room in front of him, not the zip code. What Las Vegas does add is a sharper audience. This is a crowd that’s seen plenty of stage magic, so a mentalism and mind reading show built entirely around real audience participation, without props or a set to hide behind, tends to land even harder here than it does somewhere less used to that kind of entertainment.
Las Vegas is also a market where I do a fair amount of work tailoring the show around a company’s specific sales goals, especially for the national sales meetings and incentive trips that treat a Vegas trip as the reward for a strong year. When a group of people who negotiate and read customers for a living gets to be the ones who are read instead, it’s usually the moment from the whole trip that outlasts everything else on the agenda.
BEYOND THE BALLROOM
If your group is staying an extra day, or bringing family along, Las Vegas has more to offer beyond the casino floor than most planners realize. The Sphere is an easy add for an evening of downtime, and Red Rock Canyon just outside the city offers a genuinely different pace for anyone wanting a break from the Strip. None of that is part of the show itself, obviously — my act is built for a corporate ballroom, not a family outing — but it’s useful for a planner deciding whether to build in extra time around the event.
